Thirty years ago Canada held its first and only leaders’ debate on issues identified by women. When it comes time to elect the next government in 2015, the Campaign is calling for party leaders to explain how they plan to build a more equal Canada for all, and make meaningful commitments to change women’s lives for the better, at home and around the world, starting with a nationally broadcast leaders’ debate on issues identified by women.

Launch of Shadow Report on Canada’s Implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action

The study, a shadow report on Canada’s Implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, provides a detailed view of Canada’s progress towards equality over the past five years. It was produced by 35 contributors, from 30 civil society, academic, Aboriginal, and human rights organizations, representing over three million members from every region of the country.

Young people and women remain under-represented in federal politics

From October 10-11th 2014 in Geneva Switzerland, the Inter-Parliamentary Union held its first Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians. The Conference was attended by over 180 parliamentarians from around the world. Discussions centered on efforts to challenge the ‘way politics is done’ and the role young parliamentarians can play in standing up against corruption, inequalities and unjust political, economic and social systems.  The Conference also brought to light the reality that less than 2% of parliamentarians are under the age of 30 and 10-20% are between the 30-40 years old.

ParlAmericas Group of Women Parliamentarians holds its 10th meeting on women’s healthcare

In September 2014, the Group of Women Parliamentarians, a permanent working group of ParlAmericas (a hemispheric organization composed of 35 national legislatures from North, Central and South America), held its 10th meeting in Santiago, Chile, under the theme of women’s healthcare. Much of the meeting focused on 20 years of implementation of the Programme of Action of the 1994 Cairo International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).

With a keynote address from International Planned Parenthood Federation – Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR), the meeting culminated with a strong declaration of commitment [...]

Bill C-13: Protecting Canadians from Online Crime Act
Currently in second reading in the Senate, the Bill aims to address the non-consensual sharing of intimate images – a form of sexualized violence – and gender-based hate speech online. The Bill intends to make the non-consensual sharing of intimate images a criminal offense.
